Seven Years of EiF, and the road ahead

Today officially marks the anniversary of An Empire in Flames server. Seven years ago today, EiF launched with hopes, dreams, and a lot of crazy ambition. It was designed with a core tenant in mind – “what is your ideal server?” That answer, to Lead Developer Halyn and a cohort of scrappy friends, was something that took all the great design elements from Live and made it better for PvE, PvP, and Roleplay players alike… with a side of weird.

It sounds somewhat generic, but it truly has been the guiding star for all EiF related content in the seven years since launch. The EiF Staff has grown and expanded since May 4, 2017, but that design goal has always been the same and the team always seeks to challenge themselves on just what is possible in the world of Star Wars Galaxies. While it would be a long read to list them all, some notable features that originated on EiF were feature improvements like additional player character races, combat balancing; brand new content in the form of unique PvP invasions, instances and world bosses, Jedi unlock system, and seasonal events; and weird adds like weapon holstering, holocomm, and skulking.

While the last year has been rather busy in real life for the staff, and as a result somewhat quiet for development, EiF is still committed to moving forward and providing our players with not only fun, but “the weird stuff”. In the near future, we will be finally unveiling the long awaited Mandalorian Enclave, which will open up new weapons, armor, and content for those interested in the path to become a Mandalorian. After that, we have plans to release a new instance – the “sequel” to the Plasma Mining Facility instance. Once those are out the door, focus will pivot primarily to Jump to Lightspeed. There are still a lot of technical issues to address before we will see JtL on EiF, but we’re committed to making it happen. We will also be replacing the server which EiF runs on – which should solve a lot of the lag and rubberbanding issues that have been plaguing gameplay. And in between all that, we’ll always find room for the weird stuff – smaller additions alongside other improvements.

Thank you all for being part of this journey, and thank you for joining us for seven years of EiF. Here’s to many more!

Friday Feature: Looking Back at Five Years of EiF

This week, Empire in Flames celebrated its fifth year with player-held festivities as well as the return of the annual Riddle Hunt. In today’s Friday Feature, we showcase some memories and learnings that members of the staff have shared from their years here at EiF.

What is one thing that you have learned since working on EiF?

Halyn: Players will always do the unexpected.

Mina: Scripting with LUA! It’s not something I had never dealt with previously.

Abi: There’s a reason we don’t have hard release dates – the second you set one, real lie gets in the way and you end up delayed by six months (or more)

Anishor: My C++ is rusty.

Jeil: Save your work, and make back ups. >.>

Wefi: Halyn checks the files before putting them in. So no surprise Shrek.

Kelta: Things never go to plan. Also, we tend to think alike when it comes to hiding places.

Demi:  Always have several fresh clones of your dev environment at the ready.

Traycn: How clever players can be in regards to gameplay, collection hunting, and problem-solving.

Phoenix: Players break things that shouldn’t be able to break. LUA is a terrible language. We are capable of doing more than we originally thought. Learned a bunch of ASM/Hex Editing.

Celebrating Five Years of an Empire in Flames

May 4th, 2022 marks five full years of an Empire in Flames! It’s hard to believe it’s been this long, and it’s been an amazing journey so far. Since the ‘doors opened’ on May 4th 2017, EiF has seen a lot of updates, unique content, and new additions that truly make us different than any other SWGEmu server out there. There’s so much that we’ve done over the last five years that it’s almost impossible to list it all, but here’s a brief overview of the major updates that have been released on EiF:

  • New Planets and Snapshot edits
  • GCW Invasion System
  • Profession/Combat Overhaul
  • Creature Handler Revamp
  • Unique Instances
  • Collections
  • New Seasonal/Holiday Events
  • Schisms of the Force
  • World Bosses
  • The Great Fashion Disaster

Don’t worry, that’s not all. We have so much more planned that we can’t wait to share with you. On that topic…

We’re excited to announce that the Mandalorian Enclave content is officially Coming Soon. That’s right, actual soon and not soon(tm). There are still some final tweaks to be made before its ready, but we hope to have it live and available to players in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more info!

In the meantime, we pulled some fun facts and data from the last 5 years. Enjoy!

Not Featured: 14 Characters deleted and rerolled by Demiurge

It’s been a wild ride! We want to thank you for being a part of the last five years and hope to see you for many more. We’re EiF. We do the weird stuff.

EiF Patch Notes 05/04/2022

Happy Anniversary! Today marks 5 years of Empire in Flames, and here are notes to go along with today’s 05/04/2022 patch.

Anniversary

  • This year’s Riddle Hunt is now live! Talk to the Hyperspace Navigators’ Guild member in Coronet Starport to get started. Travel across the galaxy to notable landmarks and earn prizes by finding the correct Guild Member for your riddles.
  • Special thanks to Traycn for writing this year’s riddles.
  • Special thanks to Mina for compiling this year’s painting list.

Crafting

  • Fixed lightsaber trails on several lightsabers.
  • The barrel subcomponent now offers a 5x bonus.
  • Sith Speeders can now be crafted with custom colors.

Content

  • LAAT/i airspeeder and factional jetpack schematics have been added to the war fame vendors. Factional jetpacks require players to be of the corresponding faction to equip.
  • New weapons added for the Mandalorian Enclave for future content.
  • Added Mandalorian jetpack to the Mandalorian Enclave for future content.
  • Fixed bugged Restuss and Hutt Outpost spawns appearing around 0, 0 on Rori.
  • Removed the Hutt assassin from the Hutt Outpost cloner. Players may now clone in peace once again.
  • Reverse-grip lightsabers now holster with emitter pointing downward, like other lightsabers.

Vehicles

  • There has been a vehicle backend overhaul. There are now three categories of vehicles: speeders, airspeeders, and jetpacks.
    • Speeders follow stock SWG rules – they can be called anywhere with a 15 second delay, but call instantly in city limits.
    • Airspeeders can only be called at city garages, are auto-mounted, and auto-store on dismount.
    • Jetpacks can be called anywhere instantly, but must be worn and take the backpack slot.
  • Jetpack recolor uses armor customization kits.
  • Jetpacks require both the worn inventory object and the datapad control device to function.
  • Fixed multiple bugs with auto-mount calls.
